ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER III (Physical Training and Defensive Tactics Instructor)
Salary: $38,594 - $61,427 (Grade 15) Annual Rates Effective July 1, 2011
Closing date: February 17, 2012
Main job function: This is an experienced-level instructor position. The selected candidate will provide defensive tactics and physical training instruction to entry-level and in-service law enforcement and correctional professionals. He or she will develop lesson plans and present classroom instruction, as well as practical defensive tactics and physical training.
Work location: Sykesville, MD (in southern Carroll County near Springfield Hospital Center)
Minimum qualifications:
Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Three years of experience in administrative or professional work.
Notes:
1.Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2.Additional graduate education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of thirty credit hours for each year of the required experience.
Preferred qualifications:
Experience: Two years developing and delivering training/instruction in a law enforcement or correctional setting. Preference will be given to qualified applicants whose experience in developing and delivering training/instruction includes that related to defensive tactics and/or physical fitness training.
Selection process: It is imperative that applicants provide sufficient detail regarding the specific nature and amount of their work experience to determine whether they meet the prescribed minimum qualifications. Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be considered for the position.
Examples of duties: The selected candidate will deliver classroom instruction to law enforcement and correctional professionals in defensive tactics and physical fitness; assist with the oversight/operation of the Physical Training Center and related programs; research/develop defensive tactics and physical training curricula; conduct and participate in practical training exercises in defensive tactics skills.

Emergency Vehicle Operations Instructor (Administrative Officer III)
Pay rate: $18.50 per hour (equivalent to salary grade 15) This is a contractual position without benefits. Closing date: Open Until Filled
Position duties: This is an experienced-level instructor position. The selected candidate will provide emergency vehicle operations (EVO) instruction to entry-level and in-service law enforcement and correctional officers. He or she will develop lesson plans and present classroom instruction, as well as behind-the-wheel instruction on the driving range.
Work location: The Police and Correctional Training Commissions’ Driver Training Facility in Sykesville, Maryland (southern Carroll County)
Minimum qualifications:
Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Experience: Three years experience in administrative or professional work.
Selective Qualifications:
Two years of law enforcement experience involving training or instructing other law enforcement officers. This experience may be a part of a candidate’s overall law enforcement background. Applicants must, therefore, be detailed in describing the specific nature and amount of their law enforcement training/instructional work experience.
Preferred qualifications/credentials:
A valid class “C” Maryland driver’s license or its equivalent. Demonstrable proficiency in writing, as well as presentation and communication skills. Preference may be given to certified EVO instructors, those who have successfully completed an emergency vehicle driver training instructor course, or who have significant experience as civilian vehicle operations instructors.

  • Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
  • Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.
